Ladle refining furnace (LF) is an important smelting equipment designed to refine molten steel from the primary smelting furnace such as arc furnace and converter. It acts for adjusting the temperature of molten steel and, as a process buffer, meeting the requirements for continuous casting and continuous rolling.
Ladle furnace is one of the major equipments for external refining. The key is to quickly form white slag. The purpose of slagging in LF is desulfurization, deoxidization , improving the yield of the alloy and removing the inclusions. But during slagging for aluminium-controlled steel, it needs to be considered thoughtfully due to certain conflicts among desulfurization-silicon-kickback, nitrogen addition and removal of inclusions. It is necessary for LF desulfurization, adsorption of inclusions and assurance of steel quality that the reducible white slag, of good fluidity and certain emulsibility, be formed fast and stably.
The main functions of ladle refining furnace are heating and heat preservation. Liquid steel will receive new thermal energy with arc heating, which allows adding alloys, adjusting composition and adding slagging materials to facilitate deeper desulfurization and deoxidization. Thus, the temperature for continuous casting is guaranteed, which is helpful for better quality of billet.
Another important function of ladle furnace is argon stirring. Argon is blown in through the porous bricks at the bottom. For the whole plant, the application of ladle refining furnace can speed up the production rhythm and improve the efficiency.
